Form 1099-LTC is used to report long-term care insurance benefits and accelerated death benefits paid under a life insurance contract. These payments may be made to the insured, a policyholder, or a beneficiary and must be reported to the IRS for tax purposes.
Insurance companies, government agencies, and viatical settlement providers must file Form 1099-LTC if they pay long-term care benefits or accelerated death benefits at any time during the tax year. These payers are responsible for reporting the payments to both the IRS and the recipient.
The deadline to e-file Form 1099-LTC with the IRS is March 31, 2026. If you are filing paper copies, the deadline is March 2, 2026. You must distribute recipient copies by February 2, 2026.
Form 1099-LTC has three copies, each serving different purposes:
If the recipient is both the policyholder and insured individual, you only have to furnish Copy B of Form 1099-LTC to the policyholder.
If you fail to file and furnish Form 1099-LTC within the specified deadlines, the IRS will impose penalties ranging between $60 and $680, depending on your business size and the delay period.
